The life cycle of stink bug, Glyphepomis dubia and the development of two egg parasitoids (Telenomus podisi and Trissolcus basalis) were studied at the Federal University of Maranhão, at 26 ± 2oC, relative humidity (RH) of 60 ± 10% and 12h photophase. Individuals used in the study were collected from seven rice fields located around the municipality of Arari, Maranhão, Brazil, and maintained in greenhouse and laboratory for the life cycle studies. From egg to adult, G. dubia took 35.2 days to complete the life cycle. The oviposition period was 37 days, with egg masses of about 12 eggs each and viability of 93.1%. Longevity was 53 and 65 days for females and males, respectively. The egg parasitoids Te. podisi and Tr. basalis parasitized and developed in G. dubia eggs; however, the biological characteristics of Tr. basalis were affected. Emergence of the parasitoids was higher for Te. podisi (83.5%) compared to the records for Tr. basalis (50.4%). Therefore, G. dubia may potentially achieve a pest status and Te. podisi is a promising biological control agent for G. dubia management in Brazil due to its higher longevity and better reproductive parameters.

The functionalization of cotton fabric with photoactive TiO2-Ag-AgBr nanostructured layer has been successfully developed using a low temperature non-aqueous sol-gel route and aqueous suspension of AgBr. Evidence for the growth of TiO2 layer and the immobilization of AgBr nanoparticles have been confirmed by Raman, XRD and XPS. GSDR analysis revealed a strong absorption in the visible region brought by surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag nanocrystals generated at the surface of AgBr. The XPS evidenced the presence of Ag+, Ag0 and bromine, suggesting that Ag0 formed a shell around the deposited AgBr. The immobilized TiO2-Ag-AgBr heterostructured layer imparts a strong photocatalytic activity under visible light for the degradation of dyes in aqueous solution as well as of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), a chemical warfare agent simulant. These new catalytically active functionalized fabrics, with self-detoxification properties, have great potential for application in chemical protective clothes and might offer new opportunities for the design of functional materials for toxic chemical protection.

Aiming the degradation of harmful molecules under visible light, new photocatalytic systems were created. For this purpose, the surface of chitosan thin films was modified in heterogeneous phase via a simple and straightforward mild chemical process: chemisorption of silver ions followed by the synthesis in situ of TiO2 at low temperature (100 °C). A high photocatalytic activity under visible light was observed, leading to the degradation and/or mineralization of different organic products such as o-toluidine, salicylic acid and 4-aminomethyl benzoic acid. This efficiency is partly attributed to the formation of Ag NPs and also to the unexpected appearance of AgCl NPs, likely formed from the residual chlorine contained in the chitosan. The resulting TiO2/Ag/AgCl/Chitosan system is easy to prepare under mild conditions, avoiding calcination treatments and opens new perspectives for the production of visible light-driven photocatalysts. Samples were analysed by different techniques: XRD, Raman, FE-SEM, XPS, TGA, GSDR, LIF and LIP.

RESUMO

We evaluated retrospectively, efficacy and safety of taliglucerase alfa for Gaucher disease in a Brazilian population. Thirteen patients were included for efficacy analysis only one of them naïve to enzyme replacement therapy. All the parameters evaluated remained stable throughout treatment (mean duration 3,5years). Only three patients (out of 35) had to discontinue treatment due to a serious adverse event. In conclusion, treatment with taliglucerase alfa was found to be safe and efficient.

A simple approach to functionalize cotton fabrics with Au and TiO2 nanostructured layer is presented. Hybrid fabrics (Cot-Au-TiO2) are prepared through reduction of AuCl4- on cotton, followed by a non-aqueous sol-gel procedure using tetrabutyltitanate and a hydrothermal treatment at 110°C. The generation of crystalline TiO2 is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The fibres morphology and their roughness are characterized by AFM and FE-SEM. XPS shows how the concentration of the NPs precursors (Au and TiO2) affects the layer composition. GSDR (Ground State Diffuse Reflectance Absorption Spectroscopy) and LIL (Laser induced luminescence) reveal a strong quenching effect induced by Au NPs. Photocatalytic activity measured through the Remazol Blue (RB) degradation reveals an enhancement under visible light, which increases with Au loading. This strong enhancement is explained through the surface plasmon resonance brought by Au NPs.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the best genetic markers for associative studies of the immune system in invertebrates. In the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, SNPs linked to disease resistance have been reported for some genes, such as hemocyanin, anti-lipopolysaccharide factor, and heat-shock protein 70 (Hsp70). In the present study, polymorphisms in the Hsp70 gene were investigated among three commercial L. vannamei populations bred in Northeast and South Brazil. The first population withstood a strong white spot disease outbreak; the second population suffered extended exposure to infectious myonecrosis; the third population was a high health population, which was experimentally infected with white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in the present study. All five previously known SNPs (C661A, T712C, C782T, C892T, and C1090T) were detected in the coding region of Hsp70, by Sanger sequencing of 119 shrimp. Significant differences in genetic and genotype frequencies among populations were observed for C661A, C892T, and C1090T. In the population submitted to WSSV challenge, no frequency differences were found between dead and surviving shrimp groups. These results indicate that the Hsp70 polymorphisms described here cannot be associated with WSSV tolerance. However, significant frequency differences were observed for the population exposed to infectious myonecrosis virus. This is the first time that L. vannamei Hsp70 gene polymorphisms were studied in correlation with these important shrimp viruses.

The present study assessed the diversity of black yeast-like fungi present on babassu coconut shells, a substrate rich in lipids and several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including aromatic hydrocarbons. Using different isolation methods, one-hundred-six isolates were obtained and were identified by ITS sequencing as members of the genera Exophiala, Cladophialophora, Veronaea, and Rhinocladiella. Two novel species were discovered. Eight strains were selected for assessing their ability to grow on toluene and phenyl acetate as the sole carbon and energy source. All strains tested were able to assimilate phenyl acetate, while two out of eight were able to use toluene. VOCs profiling in babassu samples was also investigated by GC-ToF MS, revealing that a complex mixture of VOCs was emitted, which included alkylbenzenes such as toluene. Assimilation of alkylbenzenes by the black yeasts might therefore be the result of evolutionary adaptation to symbiotic interactions with higher plants. The potential relationship between lipid/aromatic hydrocarbon metabolism and pathogenicity is also discussed.

Porphyrins and some of its derivatives are well known and widely used as photosensitizers (PSs) for Photodynamic Therapy of Cancer (PDT). The present study regards the characterization and evaluation of a synthesized asymmetric porphyrin dye in solution to be used as PS for PDT. This molecule was also incorporated into biopolymeric films composed by chitosan, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and gelatin in order to overtake some of the disadvantages inherent to the PS, but more important, to evaluate the potential of a system composed by the porphyrin/biopolymer to be applied as localized therapeutic agents. FTIR spectroscopy showed a strong interaction between the polymers involved in the preparation of the films under study: film 1: chitosan, film 2: chitosan/PEG and film 3: chitosan/gelatin. Photochemical studies were performed for the dye in solution and into the three different biopolymeric films. Ground state absorption showed the characteristic bands of these kinds of dyes in solution and also incorporated into the films. The films composed by porphyrin/chitosan and porphyrin into chitosan/gelatin, revealed the presence of non-emissive aggregates exhibiting a strong quenching effect in the fluorescence intensity, quantum yields and lifetimes. In this way, the system composed by the porphyrin incorporated into the chitosan/PEG film presents the best fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime. The transient absorption spectra were obtained for all the systems indicating the formation of an excited triplet state of the porphyrins following excitation, which takes special importance in the generation of phototoxic species namely singlet oxygen. Singlet oxygen quantum yields were also determined and the results obtained were very promising for the dye in solution but also for the dye into the different substrates. The release of the dye from the three different films onto a buffer solution was evaluated and we conclude that after a few days the dye was completely released by the substrates in acidic conditions. Confocal microscopy was used for the determination of the intracellular localization of the compound under study onto HeLa cells (human cervical cancer cells line). The evaluation of the PSs anticancer activity assumes special importance for PDT studies. The system should be less toxic in the dark and more active when irradiated, therefore, toxicity in the dark and phototoxicity studies onto HeLa cells were performed.

This study conducted a systematic review to assess the bi-directional association between tooth loss/edentulism and obesity. Electronic searches were performed in four different databases. Observational studies that tested associations between tooth loss/edentulism and obesity as either exposures or outcomes were included. Additionally, meta-analyses, funnel plots and sensitivity analyses were conducted to synthesize the evidence. A total of 549 articles were identified in the electronic database search. Out of which, 16 studies were included within the meta-analyses: 75% considered tooth loss/edentulism as exposure and obesity as outcome, whereas 25% alternatively considered obesity as exposure and tooth loss/edentulism as outcome. Pooled estimates showed that obese individuals had 1.49 (95%CI 1.20-1.86) and 1.25 (95%CI 1.10-1.42) times higher odds of having any tooth loss and edentulism, respectively. Alternatively, when tooth loss or edentulism were considered as exposures, individuals with any tooth loss had 1.41 (95%CI 1.11-1.79) times higher odds for obesity, while edentates had even higher odds (OR 1.60; 95%CI 1.29-2.00). The results indicate a bi-directional association between tooth loss and obesity. Considering that all selected studies were of cross-sectional study design limiting inferences on temporality, longitudinal prospective studies are required to test the causal relationship between tooth loss/edentulism and obesity or vice a versa. © 2016 World Obesity.

A green, safe and fast procedure is presented for in situ generation of nanoparticles (NPs) of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) onto cotton fibres at room temperature using water as a solvent. The method is based on a mild surface oxidation of cellulose fibres to generate in a controlled way carboxylic groups acting as a binding site for the adsorption of Cu(2+) via electrostatic coordination. Then, the adsorbed Cu(2+) ions were readly converted into Cu2O by dipping the treated cotton fibres into a aqueous solution of a reducing agent. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopic methods were used to analyse the size, morphology, chemical composition and the crystalline structure of the generated nanoparticles on the fabrics. The morphology of the ensuing Cu2O nanoparticles was shown to be dependent on the reduycing agent used. Antibacterial properties of the modified fibres were also investigated.

Sherds representative of the three Portuguese faience production centers of the 17th century - Lisbon, Coimbra and Vila Nova were studied with the use of mostly non-invasive spectroscopies, namely: ground state diffuse reflectance absorption (GSDR), micro-Raman, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and proton induced X-ray (PIXE) or X-ray fluorescence emission (XRF). X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments were also performed. The obtained results evidence a clear similarity in the pastes of the pottery produced Vila Nova and some of the ceramic pastes from Lisbon, in accordance with documental sources that described the use of Lisbon clays by Vila Nova potters, at least since mid 17th century. Quartz and Gehlenite are the main components of the Lisbon's pastes, but differences between the ceramic pastes were detected pointing out to the use of several clay sources. The spectroscopic trend exhibited Coimbra's pottery is remarkably different, Quartz and Diopside being the major components of these pastes, enabling one to well define a pattern for these ceramic bodies. The blue pigment from the Lisbon samples is a cobalt oxide that exists in the silicate glassy matrix, which enables the formation of detectable cobalt silicate microcrystals in most productions of the second half of the 17th century. No micro-Raman cobalt blue signature could be detected in the Vila Nova and Coimbra blue glazes. This is in accordance with the lower kiln temperatures in these two production centers and with Co(2+) ions dispersed in the silicate matrix. In all cases the white glaze is obtained with the use of tin oxide. Hausmannite was detected as the manganese oxide mineral used to produce the purple glaze (wine color "vinoso") in Lisbon.

This study presents several new squarylium dyes derived from benzothiazole and benzoselenazole with several structural variations, namely the nature of the heteroaromatic ring and the length of the N,N'-dialkyl groups. Before being investigated in connection with their effect on living cells and/or tissues, these novel compounds were characterized, namely with respect to the determination of their main photophysical parameters. Therefore, a study of the ground state absorption, fluorescence emission (quantum yields and lifetimes) and singlet oxygen generation quantum yields was performed for all the compounds synthesized in order to evaluate their efficiency as photosensitizers. An increase of the alkyl chain length from ethyl to hexyl did not produce a clear change in the fluorescence quantum yields, showing no influence on the photoisomerization process. Heavy atom inclusion (Se instead of S) enhanced the singlet oxygen generation efficiency and decreased the intensity of the fluorescence emission. The external heavy atom effect (I(-) as a counterion instead of CF3SO3(-)) produced a significant increase in the singlet oxygen formation quantum yield (about 20%). Transient absorption studies in aerated and oxygen free samples revealed that the photoisomerization process, which could compete with the triplet state formation for all dyes in solution, is a negligible pathway for the excited state deactivation, in accordance with the rigidity introduced by the squaric ring into the polymethine chain of the dye, both in chloroform and ethanol. However, in the case of the chloroform solution a new transient was detected in air equilibrated solutions, resulting from a reaction of the excited squarylium dye in the singlet state with CHCl3˙, and assigned to the radical cation (SQ(+)˙) of the dye.

Destacamos aspectos da teoria dos Sistemas Dinâmicos, que combina análises micro e macrogenética para mapear o processo de desenvolvimento de um fenômeno, e características do manhês que permitem supor seu papel integrado no desenvolvimento da comunicação mãe-bebê. Discutimos a concepção de universalidade versus a de generalidade e identificamos padrões de organização da comunicação e sua variabilidade resultantes do ajuste entre parceiros específicos. Concebemos as trocas adulto-bebê como co-reguladas, exibindo transformações ao longo da sua história de co-construção. Ilustramos nossa proposta para o estudo do manhês com exemplos de uma análise microgenética da fala da mãe (AU)


A literature review about motherese – a differentiated speech directed to infants – is presented to support a proposal for a microgenetic analysis of mother-infant exchanges. We present the theory of Dynamic Systems, which combines micro and macrogenetic analysis for mapping the process of change of the given phenomenon, and characteristics of motherese that allows us to assume that it integrates the development of mother-infant communication. Instead of dealing with it as a universal phenomenon, we focus on its generality, organizational patterns and variability that result from the adjustment between specific partners. The adult-baby exchanges are taken as co-regulated, exhibiting transformations through its co-constructed history. Our proposal to study motherese is illustrated through examples of a microgenetic analysis of mother’s speech (AU)

RESUMO

Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf é uma planta medicinal pertencente a família Poaceae, perene, importante para a indústria farmacêutica e alimentícia devido ao óleo essencial que produz. Um problema limitante para a produção comercial é a ferrugem, doença cujo agente etiológico é o fungo Puccinia nakanishikii Dietel. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar a ação de produtos naturais no controle da doença in vitro e in vivo. Para os testes in vitro, empregaram-se os seguintes produtos sobre a germinação de esporos do patógeno: óleos essenciais de eucalipto, palma-rosa, cravo-da-índia, menta, limão, citronela e mil-folhas; extrato pirolenhoso de eucalipto e mentol cristalizado, em diferentes concentrações. Para os testes de campo foram selecionados quatro produtos, o óleo de citronela e de eucalipto, o extrato pirolenhoso, e o mentol. In vitro, todos os agentes mostraram-se promissores no controle do patógeno. Quando em condições in vivo, sob alta severidade da doença no ato da avaliação, os produtos testados foram capazes de reduzir a severidade da doença em comparação com a testemunha. O controle da doença com os agentes naturais variou de 38% (extrato pirolenhoso) a 61%(óleo essencial de eucalipto).


Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf is a medicinal plant that belongs to the Poaceae family; it is perennial and important for the pharmaceutical and food industry due to the essential oil it produces. A limiting problem for commercial production is rust, a disease that has as etiological agent the fungus Puccinia nakanishikii Dietel. The present study aimed to evaluate the action of natural products on the disease control, in vitro and in vivo. For the in vitro tests, the following products were employed on the germination of the pathogen spores: essential oils from eucalyptus, palmarosa, clove, peppermint, lemon, citronella and yarrow, pyroligneous extract from eucalyptus, and crystallized menthol, at different concentrations. Four products were selected for the tests in the field: citronella and eucalyptus oil, pyroligneous extract and menthol. In vitro, all agents showed promising in controlling the pathogen. Under in vivo conditions and great severity of the disease at evaluation, the tested products were capable of reducing the disease severity when compared to the control. The disease control by the natural products varied from 38% (pyroligneous extract) to 61% (eucalyptus essential oil).

Introdução: Os Sistemas de Gestão Integrados de Saúde, Meio Ambiente e Segurança do trabalho - SMS permitem a agregação da qualidade, meio ambiente, saúde e segurança no trabalho com outros sistemas certificados, estando seus benefícios ligados ao investimento em pessoal, além da melhoria no desenvolvimento da tecnologia e transferência, combinado ao efeito sinérgico de todos os sistemas juntos com eficácia na redução dos custos de acidentes de trabalho e proteção ao meio ambiente. Este estudo foi realizado no Centro de Pesquisas da Petrobras- Cenpes. O conjunto de política e diretrizes corporativas de SMS da Petrobras nasceu de um processo ao longo de cinqüenta anos em que a empresa acumulou vasta experiência em segurança, meio ambiente e saúde. No Centro de Pesquisas da Petrobras – Cenpes, o Sistema de Gestão Integrado - SMS foi implantado em 2003 e implementado nos dois anos seguintes. Entretanto, não existem na literatura, trabalhos voltados para a avaliação desses sistemas utilizando dados de saúde ocupacional. Portanto, é imprescindível o questionamento sobre as políticas de gestão integradas para verificar os benefícios à saúde do trabalhador, quando este modelo de gestão é implantado. Objetivo: Analisar em que medida o Sistema de Gestão de Saúde, Meio Ambiente e Segurança (SMS) implantado no Cenpes, impacta a Saúde do Trabalhador. Método: Para verificar a efetividade do SMS foram analisados indicadores de saúde ocupacional (acidentes de trabalho e afastamentos por doenças), sensíveis à implantação do SMS a partir dos dados consolidados fornecidos pela empresa em questão, no período de janeiro de 2003 a dezembro de 2008. Introduction: The Integrated Management Systems Health, Safety and Environment of the work-SMS allows the aggregation of quality, environment, health and safety at work with other systems certificated, with benefits linked to investment in staff, in addition to improvement in the development of technology and transfer, combined to the synergistic effect of all the systems together with effective in reducing the costs of occupational accidents and protecting the environment. The set of policies and guidelines corporative of SMS of Petrobras was a process over fifty years in which the company acquired extensive experience in safety, environment and health. In the Center of Research in Petrobras-Cenpes, The Integrated Management System-SMS was implanted in 2003 and implemented the following two years. However, it doesn't exist in literature, work towards to the evaluation of systems using data from occupational health .Therefore, it is essential the questioning about the policies of integrated management to see the benefits to the health of the worker, when this model of management is implanted. The degradation photoproducts of the fungicide fenarimol obtained from irradiation of aqueous solutions with sunlight were characterised. The photoproducts resulting from samples with different exposure times were extracted and separated using chromatographic techniques. Seven main photoproducts were detected using high performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector, gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detector and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Structures are suggested for possible photoproducts based on the characterisation results, minimum energy geometry of the parent compound, and the mass spectral behaviour of fenarimol. These correspond to the compounds with m/z 328 (three structural isomers (a), (b) and (c)), m/z 294 (two structural isomers (a) and (b)), m/z 292, 278 and 190. Of the various major products detected, the isomer 328(a) is seen to be particularly unstable under the action of sunlight. The most stable photoproducts are found to be those with m/z 294(a), 278 and 190. However, upon prolonged solar irradiation all of these break down to produce polar, low molecular weight compounds. Comparison with our own and other results on fenarimol photolysis indicate significant solvent effects on the process. The combination of these structural characterisation results and previous data from spectroscopic and photodegradation kinetics studies allows us to suggest some possible mechanisms for the photodegradation of fenarimol under sunlight.
